Scavenger hunts are one of the most popular games because each scavenger hunt can be done differently with many different themes. Here are a few scavenger hunt themes that can be used to make a spectacular scavenger hunt game.

1.  Little Red Riding Hood Scavenger Hunt:

a. Get the children together to pick costumes with characters in Little Riding Hood.  This could include the grandma, the wolf (with fangs, a tail and whiskers) and Little Red Riding Hood herself.

b. Before the game, hide a number of food items. These food items can be plastic or real in large quantities depending on the number of children playing. The food could include apples, bananas, grapes, cheese, and other picnic type foods that would be placed in a basket like the story.

c. The children first gather all of the food items on their lists and put them in the baskets assigned to them. They then return to the starting point to redeem their final scavenger hunt prize.  The prize could be a bag full of candies and toy goodies, coloring books, crayons and other toys. During the time the children are on the scavenger hunt, make up a picnic of real foods to eat for a real picnic reward gathering. Riddle Treasure Hunts

A fun way to do treasure hunts is to use riddles from a Mother Goose Rhyme Book. Many parents used to and may still read books at bedtime that contain nursery rhymes. Because of this, using riddles for treasure hunts should be fun and easy. To do a riddle treasure hunt, try a piñata treasure hunt by color coding each child and hiding the colored clues in the piñata. You should have the adult in charge of the treasure hunt make up riddles and rhymes that provide clues to the location of the treasure or prize. Each child swings and hits the piñata until it breaks. Once the piñata breaks, each child then can scoop up their color coded clues, read the clues and then find their treasure prize in the second phase of the game.  Find a simple excerpt from the Mother Goose Book, write it down on a color coded piece of construction paper and hide these types of clues for each child underneath rocks, leaves and near trees if outside. If it is indoors, then hide them under chairs, couch cushions and in cookie jars. The piñata is the first part of the clues.  The other half is the second part to gain their final prize.

Valentine’s Day can also be a holiday where you can do a little bit more if your child really enjoys it. Why not plan a Valentine’s Day party this year? You can have your child help you decorate. You can make some decorations at home together to make it a fun, quality time to spend together. You can use things like construction paper and paper doilies, stickers, and/or glitter.

For the party, plan a Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt that the kids can play. You can set up the clues around the house in colder climates, or even outside if you live in a warmer climate. Depending on how many kids will be there, you can hide a good number of clues (twenty or so) to keep them moving on the hunt! Clues can be written out on valentines you make by hand like the decorations, or with some store bought ones.

You can have the clues lead to a piñata, full of Valentine’s Day goodies. The first person or group to reach it can take the first whack! Kids love piñatas – they don’t have to be just for birthdays anymore. After the goodies are all out, you and the kids can enjoy the rest of the party with some finger foods and party punch. If you like, you can have the children exchange valentines as well.  The kids will be sure to enjoy this party!

This Christmas, why not try something different? We all know that it takes hours upon hours (days even) to wrap all those gifts, and only seconds for your kids to tear them open. To make it more fun and interesting for all, try setting up a scavenger hunt instead this year. It will give you more time together on Christmas morning as a family, while you will have fun watching everyone “hunt” for their presents.

A Christmas present scavenger hunt can be done in a few different ways. You can start out at the tree, placing the clues in little decorated bags, or tied to a candy cane. Make each clue for each child so that it is age appropriate, hiding the next clue in more difficult locations for the older children and making it much easier for the little ones. You can even make each clue they find lead to a small present to keep it interesting and fun.

Decide how you want everyone to find their presents. Although you can put one at each location, depending on the size it could be much easier to have one final location for each child’s presents. You can set up a pile for each kid with their name on it, such as in a particular hidden corner. Or, you could try sending them all away.  While they are gone, you can put their presents under the tree so that when they come back at the end they find them all. Whichever way you decide, it is sure to be great, fun family time spent together!
