Instead of the traditional Easter egg hunt this year, why not try a scavenger hunt with your family? Scavenger hunts can be a fun way to get everyone engaged in an activity where they need to work together. And there are many different ways of doing it.

First, if you have a larger family, divide everyone up into teams. Let each team choose a name for their group. If you have a big range of ages, divide the teams up according to age groups as well so you can have easier hints for the younger children and more difficult ones for the older children.

Scavenger Hunt Ideas:

  • Use different colored eggs to put the clues in, and list the order in which the colors need to be found in the hunt instructions.
  • Use riddles for all the clues to insure the game is more fun and interesting.
  • Take photos of things around your house for the “clues” and have one clue leading to the next one until they reach the prize or basket at the end.
  • For young children learning to read, you can put Easter-related words in each colored egg. The word will lead them to the next egg/word and so on until they reach the end prize.
  • Before you start the hunt, you can have each child decorate their own Easter bag made out of paper lunch bags to collect clues in. Use markers, crayons, stickers, etc. to decorate the bags.

Give everyone a prize at the end and not just the grand prize for the winners. Remember, keep the boundaries clear before everyone starts to keep all involved safe and give each child a map of the property to help with finding the next clue.

Scavenger hunts can be so much fun for parents and children.  They are one of the most chosen forms of “games” or entertainment for children and adults alike.  Scavenger hunts bring out the primal hunting instinct in all age groups.  Before you can even begin to plan the hiding of the items for the scavenger hunt, you must first make sure you choose acceptable scavenger hunt items to search for.

The size of the scavenger hunt items is an important consideration.  If it is determined that all items should be brought back at once, then the size of the items should be smaller.  They should all be able to fit into a basket or sake.  Once you move into larger scavenger hunt items, you will have to provide different means to carry them or transport them back to the finish area.  Remember, the larger the scavenger hunt items are the harder that they will be to hide effectively.  Size of the items should be age appropriate.

After you get all the sizes of scavenger hunt items correct, you must then determine the right number of items to hide.  If you choose too few items, the hunt will be short and unfulfilling.  If you choose too many items, it will take too long for someone to find all the items and they can become bored with the scavenger hunt and quit the game.

If you have chosen the right sizes of items and the correct number of items, you then will have to decide how to provide clues to the players so that they can find what they are looking for.  It will not do you any good to hand a small child a list.  Small children will need pictures of scavenger items to show them what to look for.  Older children can utilize lists and even maps.
